Cross Curricular Day

On Monday 24th June, the children took part in a special Latin American cross-curricular day. The children spent the day taking part in activities designed to immerse them in elements of Latin American culture.

In the Prep-Prep, the children enjoyed practising some Portuguese with a native speaker and learnt some carnival movements inspired by salsa dancing. They built their own instruments using plates, bells and pulses and created beautiful masks and head dresses based on those traditionally worn in Brazil.

In the Prep department, Years 3 to 6 sampled some new food, learning how to give their opinion in Spanish! The children also had a taster session of Portuguese and were fascinated to learn about the links between Romance languages. Years 3 and 4 learned about the layers of the rainforest, creating a 3D model, explored llama art and tried their hand at some samba instruments. Years 5 and 6 practised salsa dancing, experimented with mixed-media decorative techniques and worked in groups to research a country in Latin America, producing exciting posters to share their findings with the other children, teachers and parents.

In the afternoon, we were treated to an energetic carnival parade from the Reception and Years 1 and 2 children, showing off the masks and instruments they had made and their new salsa moves!
